On April 29, 2021, the Ontario Government introduced Bill 284, COVID-19 Putting Workers First Act, 2021. This is an amendment to the Ontario Employment Standards Act, 2000 (“ESA”).

It requires employers to give three (3) days of paid leave for reasons related to COVID-19. This is called Infectious Disease Emergency Leave pay “(IDEL Pay”). This does not apply to employers who offered paid sick leave entitlements as of April 19, 2021; provided the sick leave entitlements meet or exceed 3 days of fully paid leave.
Before this Bill was introduced, all IDEL Leave was unpaid. Now 3 days of IDEL leave is paid.

Unpaid IDEL leave continues after the 3 days of IDEL Pay has been exhausted.
