Malnutrition in seniors is an urgent issue:
- Each malnourished person costs the healthcare system about $2,000 per hospital stay
- Accounting for about 8% of hospital budgets (approx. $2 billion)
- One out of three seniors are at nutrition risk
- Nutrition risk is an independent indicator of change in health related Quality of Life
- One out of two seniors enter hospital malnourished
- There is a need for greater nutrition attention for vulnerable older adults
- There is strong evidence to support benefits of nutrition support and team-based care to improve outcomes
Learner Objectives:
- Identify the negative effects of malnutrition on health outcomes and health care costs and the importance of screening seniors for risk of malnutrition
- Review and share validated screening tools to use in clinical practice and interprofessional treatment algorithms
- Focus on outcome measures in this population
