Malnutrition in seniors is an urgent issue:

  • Each malnourished person costs the healthcare system about $2,000 per hospital stay
  • Accounting for about 8% of hospital budgets (approx. $2 billion)
  • One out of three seniors are at nutrition risk
  • Nutrition risk is an independent indicator of change in health related Quality of Life
  • One out of two seniors enter hospital malnourished
  • There is a need for greater nutrition attention for vulnerable older adults
  • There is strong evidence to support benefits of nutrition support and team-based care to improve outcomes

Learner Objectives:

  • Identify the negative effects of malnutrition on health outcomes and health care costs and the importance of screening seniors for risk of malnutrition
  • Review and share validated screening tools to use in clinical practice and interprofessional treatment algorithms
  • Focus on outcome measures in this population
