CHRONIC INSOMNIA TOOL The Management of Chronic Insomnia Tool has been designed to guide primary care providers in assessing and managing chronic insomnia using non-pharmacological and pharmacological options in the general adult population. Developed as part of Knowledge Translation in Primary Care Initiative under the clinical leadership of Dr. Deanna Telner and Dr. Jose Silveira, it discusses appropriate management options, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) and pharmacotherapy regimens to support primary care providers in their practice. Divided into six sections, the tool highlights:
- Addressing and optimizing the management of any underlying medical, psychiatric or environmental causes
- Considering pharmacological causes of insomnia
- Non pharmacological options
- Pharmacotherapy
- Benzodiazepine or Z-drug Tapering
- Special populations
The Knowledge Translation in Primary Care Initiative is aimed at developing and disseminating health information and clinical tools to support primary care providers. Its purpose is to improve engagement and enhance communication with primary care providers across Ontario and is a collaboration of the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) and the Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario (NPAO) and the Centre for Effective Practice (CEP).
