2. Optimising teams’ capacity and creating efficiencies

Learning Objectives

Summary/Abstract

Scribes can be unlicensed, certified, or licensed clinical staff that accompanies a physician in the exam room to provide real-time documentation assistance of the clinical visit.  The literature presents medical scribes as a solution to reduce burnout and increase efficiencies. Medical scribes are responsible for real-time transcription of doctor-patient interactions, recording patient history, initiating forms, facilitating referrals, providing updates and follow-up appointment details. While physicians still review entries for relevancy and accuracy, the overall benefits contribute to improved efficiency, workflow and patient-provider interaction.  Our internal data suggests that access is timelier for those working with a scribe. A cost-benefit analysis has further demonstrated the value of investing in a scribe, either on a full or part-time basis. To further understand the nuances of integrating a scribe, two unique perspectives will be shared with varying degrees of experience and duration.
