What you need to know about OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare

AFHTO members are invited to attend a webinar on OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare facilitated by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Beginning January 1, 2018, children and youth aged 24 years and under who have OHIP coverage will be eligible for the Ontario Drug Benefit program. Enrollment through OHIP+ will be automatic, based on age and OHIP status.  There will be no upfront costs for eligible medications. Those who are eligible for OHIP+ will only need their health card number and a valid prescription from their doctor or nurse practitioner when they visit an Ontario pharmacy. To support this, they’ve released a new tool for prescribers to check if prescriptions are covered with OHIP+. A press release with information about the tool, a link to it, and links to other relevant resources is available here. In a webinar on November 30, 2017, Vivian Leong and Joel Montesanti of of the Strategy Execution Branch, Ontario Public Drug Programs provided further details regarding OHIP+, the Exceptional Access Program, and Ontario Public Drug Programs. Their presentation addressed the following questions:

  • Who is covered under OHIP+?
  • What is covered?
  • When will coverage start?
  • How does someone receive coverage?

The webinar concluded with audience questions and answers. Watch the video below, or review the slide deck here. Prescribers can find more information about OHIP+ here. Questions about OHIP+? Email OHIPPlus@Ontario.ca for answers.
